What Kills Mold And Mildew In Your Home? A Quick Guide

Mold and mildew are naturally occurring elements in an environment. They are part of nature’s recycling mechanism, breaking down dead organic tissue into usable chemicals. However, they can be a nuisance when they find their way inside your house. Molds reproduce by spores, making them a problem when they crop up in an enclosed area, like inside your home. When mold and mildew find their way into your home, you must figure out how to kill them before they ruin your decor. Mold can even cause severe health problems in some people. Let’s take a look at the most effective way to remove mold and mildew from inside your home here.

For Outdoor Fabric

If you’ve got mold and mildew on your outdoor fabric, getting rid of it’s a pretty simple process. The first thing you need to do is take your furniture outside. The open air will ensure that the spores are not concentrated on the furniture. Use chlorine bleach and hot water to wash the fabric that has mold or mildew on it. If the material would be damaged by chlorine bleach, it’s okay to use oxygen bleach instead. Finally, dry the fabric in the sun if possible. This helps to kill the remaining mold or mildew on your fabric, leaving it clean and pristine.

For Indoor Fabric

If you have furniture that can’t be taken outside, your first step is to vacuum-clean the fabric. When you’re done, take the canister outside to empty it, to ensure all spores are out of the house. Next up is an ammonia solution mixed with cool water. Please note that ammonia should NEVER be combined with chlorine bleach because they produce dangerous fumes. Use a clean white cloth to apply the solution to the mild or mildew stains. Continue applying until all of the liquid is absorbed, then leave it to sit for a bit. Next, blot dry the area with a sponge or dry cloth. Finally, use a hair dryer set on low or cool to finish drying the spot. The chemical, along with the harsh drying, should kill the mold and mildew on the discolored area.

Carpets

Freshening up carpets with mold or mildew is also pretty simple. Start by vacuuming the area thoroughly and emptying the canister outside. Next, mix one Tbsp of laundry detergent with two cups of cool water and apply it to the stained area with a damp cloth. Keep doing this until the stain is gone, then dry the area thoroughly.
